GCC-Stat Hosts the Meeting for the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA)
Wednesday the 26th of September, the GCC-Stat hosted the 30th session of the meeting for the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA) in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. The meeting was held over two days and was attended by 25 concerned international and regional organizations, including: United Nations Statistics Division, The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and a group of United Nations international committees. This marks the first time a committee meeting has been held in the Middle East, specifically in Muscat.
Dr. Salah Al-Muzahmi, Director of Research and Development Indicators Department in the GCC-Stat, confirmed that the 30th session of the meeting of the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA), held in collaboration with the GCC-Stat, emphasizes the importance of coordinating statistical work at the local, regional and international levels.
Dr. Al-Muzahmi explained the importance of the role statistics play in the international agenda as an approach to measure development, progress and sustainability in various fields and aspects of life. Moreover, he stressed the necessity of holding the meeting of the Committee at this time which observes the start of adopting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) 2016-2030. The meeting confirmed the need to develop the methodologies and tools required to measure comparable development indicators that can track regional and international progress.
It is worth noting that the Statistical Center of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC-Stat), based in the Omani capital Muscat, is an active member of the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA) since joining it in 2014. The GCC-Stat, since its inception in 2013, seeks to establish relations with regional and international organizations in order to convey experiences and expertise to national statistical centers in the GCC countries.
