International Methodologies

The GCC 2020 Population Census follows the UN Standard and Recommendations for Population and Housing censuses

These include –

  • Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses: the 2020 Round Revision 3 (draft approved in 2015)
  • Handbook on Population and Housing Census Editing, Revision 1, 2010
  • Handbook on Geospatial Infrastructure in support of Census Activities, 2009
Standards and Classifications

The Principles and Recommendations, Revision 3 set out the internationally recommended topics, including associated classifications.  For the 2020 round, all countries are recommended to use the following standards:


  • International recommendations concerning statistics of work, employment and labour underutilization, adopted by the Nineteenth International Conference of Labour Statisticians in 2013.


  • The International Standards on measuring Disability in Censuses and Population Surveys as developed by the Washington Group
  • International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC 4)
  • International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED 2011)
  • GCC Occupation Classification and Description 2014
